چکیده

Abstract Systems of nearly parallel, slender vortex filaments in which angular momentum is conserved are an important simplification of the Navier-Stokes equations where turbulence can be studied in statistical equilibrium. We study the canonical Gibbs distribution based on the Klein-MajdaDamodaran (KMD) ([7]) model and find a divergence in the mean square vortex position from that of the point vortex model of [11] at moderate to high temperature. We subsequently develop a free-energy equation based on the non-interacting case, with a spherical constraint, which we approximate using the method of Kac-Berlin [1], adding a mean-field term for logarithmic interaction. We use this free-energy equation to predict the Monte Carlo results.

Trapped Slender Vortex Filaments in Statistical Equilibrium

The statistical mechanics of nearly parallel vortex filaments confined in the unbounded plane by angular momentum, first studied by Lions and Majda (2000), is investigated using a mean-field approximation to interaction and a spherical constraint to develop an explicit formula for the mean square vortex position or length scale of the system, R, verified with Path Integral Monte Carlo simulatio...

Investigation of vortex-induced vibration phenomenon in verticallong circular slender structure with non-uniform flows

Analyzing the vortex-induced vibration of a slender marine structure withlength to diameter ratio up to 200 is the objective of this study. This slender is free to move in both in-line and cross flow directions and immersed completely in water. Three different types of shear currents pass on it and cause to vibrate slender in different forms. Nowadays, these vibrations are very important for de...

On the motion of slender vortex filaments

Several approaches for slender vortex motion ~the local induction equation, the Klein–Majda equation, and the Klein–Knio equation! are compared on a specific example of sideband instability of Kelvin waves on a vortex. Numerical experiments on this model problem indicate that all these equations yield qualitatively similar behavior, and this behavior is different from the behavior of a nonslend...

Slow inviscid flows of a compressible fluid in spatially inhomogeneous systems.

An ideal compressible fluid is considered, with an equilibrium density being a given function of coordinates due to presence of some static external forces. The slow flows in such system, which do not disturb the density, are investigated with the help of the Hamiltonian formalism. The equations of motion of the system are derived for an arbitrary given topology of the vorticity field. The gene...

Explicit Mean-field Radius for Nearly Parallel Vortex Filaments in Statistical Equilibrium

Explicit radius for nearly parallel vortex filaments in equilibrium 1 Geophysical research has focused on flows, such as ocean currents, as two dimensional. Two dimensional point or blob vortex models have the advantage of having a Hamilto-nian, whereas 3D vortex filament or tube systems do not necessarily have one, although they do have action functionals. On the other hand, certain classes of...
